The Black Box was our second mock-up/show unit. In this particular project, we wanted a build that incorporated all the necessary Mechanical, Electrical, & Plumbing (MEP) to understand how to effectively place these fittings into any building application. This small unit is comprised of a mini kitchen, bathroom, and shower. Most of the water channels and electric wiring were implanted directly into the Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Panels by means of CNC machining. The results were very clean and tidy.

Differentiating from our first mock-up unit (Ruang Interview) which was purely exposed Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), we also wanted a show unit which highlighted Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in combination with other building materials upon finishing. In The Black Box, we installed other building materials that is common among any regular home build in the 20th century. For the bathroom, we included; A TOTO shower head, a TOTO one-piece toilet, all the necessary lightings & switches, Glass Reinforced Cement (GRC) board, Ceramic flooring, and natural stone finish for the walls. For the Kitchen area, we included; A wash TOTO basin, an electric cooker hood, an electric stove, all the necessary electric sockets & lighting switches, Ceramic flooring, parquet flooring, concrete plaster flooring, gypsum board for the walls, and acrylic casing for exposed members of the MEP that we wanted to showcase. For the exterior cladding of The Black Box, we used waterproof GRC board and finished it in black.
